What More You Can Do This Week
Dear Fellow Tea Party Patriots,

As we enter these last few days before Christmas and the last few days before the vote on health care in the Senate, there are still a few things you can do on the government takeover of health care.  There are 2 more 60 vote decisions that must be voted on this week before the bill comes to a final vote.  Keep the pressure on the Senators during this time.  It is not just the quantity of calls that influences their decisions but also the passion and intensity.  Keep the pressure and intensity up.

Here are immediate actions you can take:

  • Freedom Works is hosting a Candlelight Vigil outside of Sen. Webb’s Falls Church office on Tuesday December 23, from 4:30 pm – 7:00.  7309 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA; 202-379-6583.  http://912marchondc.ning.com/events/candlelight-vigil-at-senator
  • Sign this petition stating your opposition to government takeover of health care.
  • Watch the new video They Refuse to Listen on our website.  This video was produced by our good friends and fellow Tea Party Patriots at TeaPartyMovie.com.  The Tea Party Documentary is an excellent movie and will make an wonderful Christmas gift for you.
  • If you cannot get through to your Senator’s office, we have a new plan of action.  It is to call your local media (radio and newspaper). Read below for details.
  • Host your own Candlelight Vigil this week.  Be sure to call your local media before hosting so they will come report on it. Also, enter the event on teapartypatriots.org so other Patriots around your area will know what is going on.  You can find events listed on our site by going to teapartypatriots.org and clicking on Tea Parties. While this list does not pertain to Candlelight Vigils specifically, you can use this list to help you get started: http://www.teapartypatriots.org/2010/TeaPartyChecklist.aspx.
  • Consider setting up Watch Dog Teams.  The teams will monitor by the hour in each state to see what is being said on the Senate Floor.  When something is particularly objectionable and it pertains to your state, take notes and send them far and wide. Ask people to send letters to that Senator’s office and as letters to the editor to local papers.  That way more people will know what is actually happening on the floor of the Senate.  You can watch C-Span coverage live here. Enter your watch dog group on our site so that others can contact you if they want to join it.  To enter your group on our site: Register and Sign In, click on Tea Parties, click on your state, click on Groups, click on Start a New Group.
  • As if you do not already have enough reasons to oppose this bill, read below to see what our taxpayer money is going to in the Senate Health Care Bill.
  • Call your Senators offices and ask if they have read the bill in full.  Also ask if they are going to read each and every bill before voting for them.  If you have any additional Senators who are willing to read the bills, send the information to the folks at pledgetoread.com using this form: http://www.letfreedomringusa.com/contact.  Also, read the poll below where 84% of Americans actually agree on something. It is incredible that so many Americans agree on a single issue.

Thank you for working so hard to preserve liberty for future generations!  If there is anything the National Coordinators can do for you this week, please let us know.  We are here to help you.

Can’t Get Through to Your Senator? Call the Media!
As you already know, it has become virtually impossible to communicate with your elected representatives.  Senators are taking their phones off the hook, unplugging their fax machines and ignoring the thousands of emails pouring into their computers.  They simply aren’t interested in hearing from you.  Against overwhelming public pressure, and polls which continue to show that an increasingly large majority of Americans oppose what they are doing, the Senate appears poised to pass a healthcare bill which none of them have even read.  And yet even as public outrage and anger grow, the media is remiss in its coverage, pretending that we don’t exist.    So now it’s time to change strategies.

While we want you to continue to call your Senators, any time you can’t get through, we encourage you to call your local radio and television stations and newspapers to express your outrage at your continuing inability to reach your elected representatives.  When we melt the switchboards of the media outlets, it becomes far more likely that they will begin reporting on your outrage.  If thousands of people in each area are calling their media outlets, they will struggle to handle the flow of calls.  While Senators may ignore us, the media outlets are businesses that cannot afford to stop answering our calls.

Don’t give up…the battle is not over.  The fight is in full swing, and it’s up to the Patriots around the nation to make the difference.  You are the future of this nation, and only you can make the difference.”

What Do 80%+ of Americans Agree On?
So-called “80 percent issues” are rare in politics: issues that garner public support of 80% or more.

We have a new one from a Zogby survey Let Freedom Ring conducted just last week.

Here is the question:

Some contend that the reason federal legislation is often thousands of pages long is because provisions to benefit special interests can be more easily buried in long bills, and so citizens cannot decipher the legislative language quickly enough to be able to communicate support or opposition to their Senators and Members of Congress before a vote is taken. Do you strongly agree, somewhat agree, somewhat disagree or strongly disagree with this opinion?

1. Strongly agree
2. Somewhat agree
3. Somewhat disagree
4. Strongly disagree
5. Not sure

The total of those who “agree” is 84% — a truly phenomenal result.  And 61% of that 84% agree “strongly.” Even 69% of Democrats agree.  For Democrat Senators to disregard the views of 69% of likely Democrat voters is politically perilous and likely to be regarded as arrogant and out of touch with their base.

“In Addition To The Medicaid Carve Out, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) Negotiated An Exemption From The Insurance Tax For Non-Profit Insurers Based In His State. The Language Was Written In A Way That Only Mutual Of Omaha Insurance Company, As Well As Blue Cross Blue Shield Nonprofit Plans In Nebraska and Michigan, would qualify, according to a Democratic Senate aide.” (“Nelson Wins Insurance Tax Exemption, Too,” Politico, 12/19/09)

VERMONT

“The Health Care Overhaul Taking Shape In Congress Includes A Provision Pushed By Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy To Increase The State’s Medicaid Payments By $250 Million Over Six Years. The Provision, Also Supported By Sen. Bernie Sanders, Is Included In An Amendment Of Negotiated Provisions Offered By Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid On Saturday. The bill would require all states to expand their Medicaid programs to cover more low-income individuals and would increase Medicaid payments to cover the expansion. Leahy, Sanders and others have argued that Vermont would have been penalized because it already has expanded its coverage.” (“Health Bill Boosts Vt. Medicaid Payments,” The Associated Press, 12/19/09)

FLORIDA

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) Negotiated A Deal To Grandfather Medicare Advantage Enrollees In Florida. “A fiery John McCain took to the Senate floor to offer a health care amendment — and tweaked Bill Nelson in the process. The Arizona Republican said his amendment would send the Senate health care bill back to committee to grandfather in all enrollees in the Medicare Advantage programs — Nelson and a number of Democrats successfully negotiated grandfather clauses for seniors in their states in exchange for supporting the bill.” (“John McCain Takes On Bill Nelson,” The Miami Herald‘s “Naked Politics” Blog, 12/7/09)

LOUISIANA

“And Reid Already Has Established A Dangerous Precedent, By Dangling $300 Million In Medicaid Funding For Louisiana To Win Landrieu’s Support For Bringing The Bill To The Senate Floor. Months Earlier, Reid Had Carved Out His Own Medicaid Exemption For Nevada. One addition he made to the Senate bill, an increase in the Medicare payroll tax for high earners, has raised concerns with Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (Maine). Snowe, the only Republican who has been at least somewhat supportive of Democratic reform efforts, cited its potential to harm small businesses.” (“Reid’s Recipe For Getting Health-Care Deal Done,” The Washington Post, 12/4/09)

PriceWaterhouseCooper released an independent study of the Senate Finance Committee version of the government takeover of health care bill.  The study showed that American family’s budgets will be severely impacted by the bill and that health insurance premiums will increase dramatically.  You may wish to read the study and use this as supporting documentation when you contact the Senators.  Additionally, you may find some these resources helpful as well:
